چکیده

We consider the response to incentives as an explanation for observed productivity differences within a firm that paid its workers piece rates. We provide a framework within which the observed productivity differences can be decomposed into two parts: One due to differences in ability and the other due to differences in the response to incentives. We apply this decomposition to male and female workers from a tree-planting firm in British Columbia, Canada. Our evidence (both experimental and nonexperimental) suggests that there was no difference in the reaction to incentives between male and female planters. The productivity differential male planters enjoyed arose because of differences in ability, interpreted as strength in our application. r 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Incentives and Transactions Costs Within the Firm: Estimating an Agency Model Using Payroll Records

We estimate an agency model using the payroll records of a copper mine that paid a production bonus to teams of workers. We estimate the cost of incomplete information due to insurance and incentives considerations and the inefficiency caused by the simple form of the incentive contract itself. At the estimated parameters the cost of worker risk aversion (insurance) is of similar magnitude to m...

Do option-like incentives induce overvaluation? Evidence from experimental asset markets

One potential reason for bubbles evolving prior to the financial crisis was excessive risk taking stemming from option-like incentive schemes in financial institutions. The main results are that (i) we observe significantly higher market prices with option-like incen...

Can Personality Explain what is Underlying Women's Unwillingness to Compete?

There is ample evidence that women do not react to competition as men do and are less willing to enter a competition than men (e.g., Gneezy et al. (2003), Niederle and Vesterlund (2007)). In this paper, we use personality variables toto understand the underlying motives of women (and men) to enter a competition or avoid it. We use the Big Five personality factors (Goldberg (1981), McCrae and Co...

Estimating Intensive and Extensive Tax Responsiveness: Do Older Workers Respond to Income Taxes?

This paper studies the impact of income taxes on intensive and extensive labor supply decisions for older workers. The literature provides little evidence about the responsiveness of the older population to tax incentives, though the tax code is a potentially important mechanism for affecting retirement behavior. We estimate the intensive and extensive margins jointly with a new approach accoun...
